This course is a must for all in the support and care professions! Attachment theory is one of the most important theories of human nature. This course will explore why attachment theory is so important, how it develops and what happens when the attachment process is derailed. It will explore the neurobiology of attachment; how to spot secure and insecure attachment styles; how an understanding of attachment theory can inform our contact with colleagues and service users and be used to design services including Psychologically-informed and Trauma-informed services.
Length: Four modules, duration: 1-1.5 hour study per module
Course Objectives
This course will help you -
- Define attachment and learn the basics of attachment theory including how the attachment process develops and why is it one of the most important and most researched theories of human nature.
- Learn about the neurobiology of attachment and its vital role in brain development, biological, psychological, social and intellectual functioning.
- Learn what happens when the attachment process is derailed, the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), as well as adaption, resilience and the buffer of positive interactions.
- Understand a variety of presentations and behaviours from an attachment theory perspective.
- Understand how different secure and insecure attachment styles present and how to best support individuals with insecure attachment patterns that may find it hard to trust and take-up support.
- Reflect on how an understanding of attachment theory can inform our contact with colleagues and service users and be used to design services, including Psychologically-informed and Trauma-informed services
Your Instructor
Dr Natalie Isaia is a Clinical Psychologist working primarily in the homelessness sector developing psychologically informed environment (PIE) approaches in frontline services. Natalie has a longstanding passion for working with socially excluded populations, including refugees and asylum seekers and individuals who are homeless. Natalie’s clinical training has focused on understanding and supporting complex presentations, in particular complex trauma. Natalie draws from a variety of psychological frameworks including attachment theory and neurobiological theories. She is trained to deliver therapy in multiple models including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy.
Natalie’s work has drawn her into organisational psychology and in recent years she has focused on training and upskilling frontline staff working in third-sector and social care organisations. Natalie believes that disseminating knowledge and empowering staff to work confidently with individuals who can present with complex needs and challenging behaviour, is crucial to effecting systemic change and supporting marginalised individuals who may otherwise be excluded from accessing appropriate support.
