In this course on Understanding and Working with Substance Use you will learn about the prevalence, context and problems associated with substance use disorders. Alongside substance specific knowledge, you’ll get to develop your understanding on how to comprehensively assess and formulate substance use in an individualised and person-centred way. Finally, we’ll learn some practical techniques to guide your use of psychosocial interventions that can support people with substance use disorder to achieve wellbeing, maintain recovery and sustain long term behavioural change.

Like all aneemo courses, this course contains more than 20 bitesize video tutorials that sit alongside study materials, downloadable worksheets, toolkits, reflective exercises, links to further reading, quizzes to assess learning and official CPD Certification upon completion.

Dr Charlotte Lemaigre and Owain Ashworth

Dr Charlotte Lemaigre is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner currently working in an NHS addictions service and also in independent practice. She specialises in trauma and uses a variety of evidence-based therapy models including cognitive behavioural, schema, compassion-focused as well as trauma-focused ways of working to address substance use disorders and comorbid mental health problems. She has a particular passion for peer support, service user involvement and ensuring that addictions services are psychologically informed in order to support people in recovery to work towards and sustain meaningful change in their lives.

Owain Ashworth is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and NMP with 20 years’ experience working in addiction services both in Glasgow and London with a background in training GPs and other clinicians in the treatment of substance use disorders. He has spent the last 15 years prescribing for both alcohol and substance use disorders, as well as in ADHD. He specialises in the crossover between addictions and ADHD.
